Hey there, welcome to the pod cast.
In today’s episode we’re going to be talking about Your Authentic Self verses Your Ego Self.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you may have heard me say things like
- Ego
- Inner Critic
- Inner Cheerleader
- Authentic Self
Whether you are newcomer, or a Holistic Vibes Original, today I’m going to talk a little more about these terms, and what they really mean.
Mini Devil & Angel Story
In real life, we actually have something similar that goes on, not on our shoulders, but in our heads.
In reality, the little mini-devil in this scenario is representing your Ego Self while the Mini Angel is representing your Authentic Self.
I like to refer to your Ego Self as your Inner Critic because frankly, that’s precisely what it does.
The job of your Ego Self is to just be there, nagging, critiquing everything you do and holding you back.
Not necessarily to stop you in your tracks, it just wants you to be cautious, and it wants you to just kind of take your time, just think about it, you don’t have to do it yet, besides it may not be the right thing for you at this time.
- It might not be worth it
- You might not have enough money to start
- You might not be clever enough
- People might judge you
This is Inner Critic all over, it’s just there in the background telling you don’t know enough or you’re not good enough.
On the other side of the coin we have our Authentic Self which I like to call our Inner Cheerleader.
Because Inner Cheerleader, unlike Inner Critic, really wants to bump us up.
Instead of saying ‘no you can’t’, Inner Cheerleader is going:
- Yes you can
- Yes you are smart enough
- You’ve got enough resources and enough money to do whatever it is you want to do
- You want to do it? Yes why not! Let’s do it! Life’s too short
- You’re absolutely capable
- You absolutely can
- You’ve absolutely got the will power
- You’re smart enough
- You’re old enough
It gives you that validation that you can and your Inner Cheerleader, Your Authentic Self, wants you to go out there and do.
It wants you to live up to your full potential, it wants you to make those changes.
Whereas your Inner Critic – not so much
It’s like an eternal battle between
- Good and Evil
- Light and Dark
- Your Inner Cheerleader and Your Inner Critic
- Your Authentic Self and Your Ego Self
No matter what stage you are at with your Spiritual Journey, this is a life long battle, this is an every day thing to keep batting that Inner Critic away so that your Authentic Self can come to the foreground and start guiding you in your every day life.
Helping to guide you in all your decisions.
Learning how to allow your Heart, your True Self, your Authentic Self, your Inner Cheerleader to come to the foreground and make decisions.
Even something as simple like:
- Do I want a cup of tea or coffee?
- Or do I just want a glass of water?
- What do I want?
Ask yourself the question and then pause, sit with the thoughts and feelings and give yourself the space to allow the answer to float to the surface and into your consciousness. When you have your answer – go with it.
If we take this same scenario again, Inner Critic would probably say something like, yes you could have any of these – but how about a Dominos because you’re probably hungry. This probably isn’t thirst, this is probably hunger, so maybe have a snack, have a chocolate bar? That’ll sort your thirst out, I mean hunger out. Go get a chocolate bar, or crisps, or a takeaway.
That is your Inner Critic all over, especially if you’re trying to lose weight or you’re trying to live a healthier lifestyle.
That Inner Critic is always there trying to sabotage you, telling you no you can’t do this, but why not do that instead because it’s more comfortable.
When I’m talking about the eternal battle between two forces, this is exactly what I mean.
It is the everyday fight between the side of you that want’s to hold you back, sabotage you, keep you safe, keep you comfortable and keep you exactly where you are and not change, not create those waves.
Whereas your Authentic Self, your Inner Cheerleader recognises when change needs to happen, recognises when something is not aligned and therefore change needs to happen in order to come back into alignment.
All your Authentic Self wants is for you to be happy, thrive, live your purpose, love your life and love your whole self.
It’s like the old proverb:
You have two wolves inside of you, one representing Darkness or your Ego Self, the other representing the light, or your Authentic Self.
Which is the wolf that wins?
It is the wolf that you feed.
If you feed into your Ego Self – your Inner Critic wins.
If you feed into your Authentic Self – your Inner Cheerleader wins.
